People of Waterscape

Story is all about character, and this is the cast I’d like to build within the Waterscape, the first of the four elemental worlds. Some of these characters will become PCs with options for leveling up, just to streamline the otherwise immense 3.5e level-up process. Other characters will become NPCs. Still others must remain NPCs, due to their nature within the setting.

💌 Note the darfellan (on land) and aventi (in the sea) are the native races of Waterscape, but the region’s since been colonized by rainforest elves (on land) and aquatic elves (in the sea); and this colonization, though detrimental to darfellan and aventi culture, happened in response to the invasion of anguillian.

Rainforest Elves

Had the aberrant-race of anguillian never set their eyes on the treasures of the darfellan and aventi cultures, the elves would have left them alone to continue cultivating their land in peace; the elves are not known as hostile colonialists, so much as inevitable allies that occupy spaces targeted by abyssal creatures. High elves, dark elves, and other elf subspecies have similarly colonized other parts of the world in an effort to add forces to native races who struggle with mind flayers, beholders, and other abyssal threats. In the case of the rainforest elves—who, legend speaks, evolved from former alliances between aquatic elves and wood elves—had they not colonized darfellan lands, anguillian would’ve rocked the joint. None of the current generations of rainforest elves remember the days of colonization; Waterscape is simply their home now.

Lancer (NPC Only), a half aquatic elf, half rainforest elf soulknife, and birthright son of one of the Seven Maidens who oversees the Cities of Rain, Lancer has a long-time childhood rival, Percy, if you could call an obviously lesser-skilled soulknife a “rival;” Lancer trumps Percy in every way, which is why when Captain Kierna seeks heroes for her quest to find the Rod of Seven Parts, Lancer sees it’s not something worth his time, but mere child’s play; no, Lancer has other, more important plans in mind…

Percival Forestrun (PC or NPC), a half frost elf, half rainforest elf soulknife, and adopted son of one of the Seven Maidens who oversees the Cities of Rain, Percy has a long-time childhood rival, Lancer, who’s also a soulknife of considerable strength and grace; so Percy needs to do well on his mission with Captain Kierna, to show up Lancer’s achievements, to fill the emptiness of loneliness with superiority, to finally put his ego to rest…

  • LVL 20 BUILD A: Soulknife 10 / Soulbow 10 (Complete Psionic, pg. 36)
  • LVL 20 BUILD B: Soulknife 5 / Illumine Soul 5 (Complete Psionic, pg. 33) / Horizon Walker (3.5 SRD)

At the beginning of the adventure, choose one from the following three options, in each of the three below categories:

  • BONUS FEAT (because you need that extra edge!): (1); (2); (3);
  • FEAT: (1); (2); (3);
  • MAGIC ITEM: (1); (2); (3).

Other stats are provided on his character sheet.

Veridian Warble (PC or NPC), the rainforest elf lurk, is a young man at just shy a hundred years old, trained all his life in the more subtle psionic arts, so that every move he makes is intentional, every thought precise, rarely speaking yet more than able; but his secret is, he’s actually a nobody, and quite poor, getting by on the surface by stealing the right clothes, imitating the right accent, or otherwise cutting the corners and edges he needs to temporarily fit in…

  • STABLE BUILD: Veridian simply levels up the Lurk class, straight to 20.

At the beginning of the adventure, choose one from the following three options, in each of the three below categories:

  • BONUS FEAT (because you’re sophisticated shit): (1); (2); (3);
  • FEAT: (1); (2); (3);
  • MAGIC ITEM: (1); (2); (3).

Other stats are provided on his character sheet.

Luna Lirahsong (PC or NPC), the rainforest elf bard, a middle-aged elf at three-hundred-and-two years old, yet still a wee too young to remember the days of colonialism; her grandfather was a seafaring adventurer, and he told her many stories, which filled her with such wonder, magic emerged from her being. For elves, who are normally psionic in nature, the emergence of arcane magic seems quite out of the ordinary, and even at times ominous, so that Luna was shunned by her friends and family members, inevitably losing contact with even her parents; but she’s never felt too down about her homelessness, drifting from suburb to suburb, since as she stays for a week or two, she tells her grandfather’s stories at the inn, earning just enough money to make it by, keeping her family history moving along with her; and she cannot wait to tell stories to the future heroes aboard the seer’s ship, just to be out at the ocean, for another change of pace…

Other stats are provided on his character sheet.

💌 Note the Seven Maidens of the Cities of Rain are made of two rainforest elves, two aquatic elves, two darfellan, two aventi, and a snow elf; and locals are disgruntled by the elf majority; but aside from this complaint, people are pleased with how their rulers rotate authority over the Seven City-States of Rain, equally sharing responsibility—and therefore, tension—between borders.

Aquatic Elves

Although [rainforest] elves are renowned as daring and skillful seafarers above the waters, the greatest legacy of elves and sea lies below the surface of the ocean. The nations of the aquatic elves are as ancient and [psionically] powerful as those of their land-dwelling cousins… aquatics elves dwell in the shallower parts of the ocean, usually within a few miles of the coast—[but given the Shallow Sea extends these hospitable waters for thrice that distance from Waterscape’s shores, some of the aquatic elf kingdoms of this region can reach the most remote spaces]—for the deeper parts of the sea tend to be not only too cold and lightless for their taste, but also home to their blood enemies, the [anguillian].

Stormwrack, pg. 39

Captain Kierna (NPC Only), an aquatic elf psion (seer) whose childhood visions told her to ascend the Shallow Seas, then journey into the lands of the rainforest elves; there, she’d hire a woodworker to build her a ship, which would take her—and a small band of sailors—into the currents, in search of the Four Keys of the Tides.

Abanoni (PC or NPC), an aquatic elf psion (egoist) who hero-worships Captain Kierna, the divine seer of the aquatic elves; but Aba’s psionic powers are a different sort of miracle, one which she hasn’t fully grown into yet…

  • LVL 20 BUILD A: Psion (Egoist) 5 / Cleric 5 / Psychic Theurge 10 (WotC Archives)
  • LVL 20 BUILD B: Psion (Egoist) 10 / Loremaster 10 (3.5 SRD)

Other stats are provided on her character sheet.

Kula Lanari (PC or NPC), an aquatic elf wilder, and Captain Kierna’s younger sister; she also has visions, but they all happen in her dreams, and she wakes up never remembering any of them. It makes for a carefree life. Kula’s joining her sister on her quest in hopes of helping her find the Four Keys of the Tides…

  • STABLE BUILD: Kula simply levels up the Wilder class, straight to 20. (3.5 SRD)

💌 Note the Four Keys of the Tides are magical items that upgrade into the two of the seven pieces for the Rod of Seven Parts.

Aventi

Citizens of an ancient empire that sank beneath the ocean, the aventi adapted to their new home and now adventure both at sea and on land. A proud people who hold personal honor in high regard, the aventi can be found anywhere from the [elf]-settled coasts to the deepest trenches of the [anguillian-occupied] ocean floor.

Stormwrack, pg. 34

Myrtle Aventier (PC or NPC), an aventi wizard of the last magic-using Aventier bloodline, the direct lineage of her people’s saviors, raised as a shrine maiden, to perhaps become one of the next Seven Maidens of the Cities of Rain; she believes its her divine responsibility to help with the seer’s quest to find the Rod of Seven Parts, so she’s all-in, full-speed-ahead, no-matter-the-cost…

Other stats are provided on her character sheet.

Quarealis, Squire of the Pearl (PC or NPC), an aventi paladin who one day hopes to exact revenge for the fallen aventi of the anguillian invasion, in the name of the Order of the Pearl; Quarealis, or Quarry, finds joy in dispelling the myths that paladins are uptight, upright pains-in-the-arse by instead acting as a shining beacon of hope and laughter wherever he goes…

  • LVL 16 BUILD A: Paladin 6 / Knight of the Pearl 5 (Stormwrack, pg. 53) / Topaz Guardian 5 (Lords of Madness, pg. 203)

Darfellan

The darfellan were once a peaceful race of hunter-gatherers who lived among the surf and sea stacks of forbidding coastlines. Then the [anguillian] discovered them, beginning a century-long struggle that almost ended in the extinction of the darfellan race. The remaining darfellan are brooding wanderers [or outliers in the suburbs of elf cities], craving the chance to exact a final measure of vengeance against the [anguillian] who wiped out their kin.

Stormwrack, pg. 37

Gorgon (PC or NPC), a darfellan druid who practices the old ways of magic, a tradition of the native races, before elves arrived from a distant world, and psionics swept through the Waterscape; Gorgon descends from a long line of druidic darfellan leaders, before the rainforest and aquatic elves—with their psionic prowess—quickly dominated the land and sea; and while the darfellan are normally hesitant to work with the elves, Gorgon, youngest of the druid-sons, insists the native races need to support Captain Kierna in pursuit of the Four Keys of the Tides, to preserve the balance of nature…

  • LVL 17 BUILD A: Druid 7 / Wavekeeper 10 (Stormwrack, pg. 77)

💌 Note the anguillian are a lawful evil aquatic aberration-race (think Lords of the Abyss) from Stormwrack, pg. 137:

This creature resembles a cross between a humanoid and an eel, with two fleshy appendages tipped with bony pincers, two stubby hind legs, and a hideous circular mouth filled with rings of teeth… A high chief rules and is served by numerous chieftains, who hold administrative position, and subchiefs, who lead small hunting or battle groups.
